Lois Duncan's 1958 young adult classic tells the story of what happens when the debutante tradition comes to one small town.

I read this book when I was 13 (yes that makes me old) but not too old to order it from amazon when I found who the author was by using amazon's website for books without authors. This book is about Lynn Chambers, daughter of Dr. Chambers who's job takes him from the exclusive side of the town as he treats all people from all walks of life. Her crowd is mostly from "the hill" the exclusive and monied families and is excited when she learns they are making the Debuts into society. She doesn't know that her father will not allow her to become a deb and feels as though she gets left out of everything. On top of this drama, her boyfriend is away at college with her brother so she does feel like an outsider with the friends she has always hung out with. She does find out that there are many activites and people not associated with the "hill crowd" and finds herself enjoying new and different people and realizes that her father did make a good choice by not allowing her to participate. As it says in the book, "some of the finest people I know don't come from the hill." It's a fun book to read and I'm glad that I get to re-read it again.Product details

Debutante Hill (Audible Audio Edition) Lois Duncan Emma Galvin Audible Studios Books Reviews
Lois Duncan's first book (reissued by Lizzie Skurnick Books) was such a fun reading experience. Dating in the 1950s sounded bizarre and confusing and I LOVED reading about it. There was a kind, helpful rich boy and a down-on-his-luck bad boy (named DIRK!) and they were both cute (duh). At one point, a character unironically said "see you in the funny papers." Now I want to read all of Lois Duncan's early works.
Huzzah! Lois Duncan's first novel is back in print, thanks to Lizzie Skurnick books! Duncan's regular readers might be surprised; no dead teachers make an appearance, no ghosts, no evil ghosts lurking about the fringes. However, something else is lurking the structure of class, and the difference between haves and have nots.
Lynn Chambers is a girl of her times she has good friends, an irritating little sister, a boyfriend who just went to college but she gets to wear his ring around her neck. At the start of her senior year, she finds out that a woman has decided to have a debutante season in Rivertown. All the upper class girls in Lynn's circle are thrilled. Lynn is beyond excited. However, her father puts his foot down no daughter of his will be a deb. For the first time in her life, Lynn is an outsider.
However, being an outsider isn't that bad. She gets to know Annie Masters, a wonderful artist who is on the wrong side of the tracks; Annie's brother Dirk, who is crushing on Lynn. Lynn finds out her senior year that there are all types of people, and there's a difference in how they are treated by social class. This is a fantastic debut for Lizzie Skurnick books!!!
Took me back to my teenage years; we didn't have debs, but the h.s. cliques, friendships and romances are movingly familiar. I read this in one big gulp.
as expected--good read for ladies on the beach
I received my order promptly in great condition. It was good as I ever remembered when reading it as a junior in high school in the very early 70's. The memory of this book has stayed with me through the years and I am very happy to have been able to purchase it.
A wonderful coming-of-age novel! I loved going back in time to the 50's era. The characters were well-developed and you could feel their angst. I would highly recommend this novel to others.
It was fun to read this very first novel of Lois Duncan's, but it wasn't great. I'm sure she'd say the same thing. Certainly not at all like her subsequent books. Worth a read if you are a big Duncan fan.
